Plato's idea of education
Plato was an Athenian philosopher and one of the ingenious thinkers during the period of 425 BC. Plato investigated a wide range of topics including politics; he was the first man to present the theory of education. Being a student of Socrates, Plato’s work was greatly influenced by Socrates beliefs. Plato is known for his influential works "The Republic." Plato describes several topics of morality and justice. Although Plato's Republic is known to defend justice, he also explores his philosophy of education. Plato believes that education and justice are connected, without education, there will be no justice.
According to Alain Badiou's translation of the Republic, Alain Badiou's describes some of the principles of education. Badiou presents Plato's educational philosophy describing education as knowledge of reason, but not just opinion or desire or power (Badiou 113). Plato's main concern is the education of the guardians; Plato emphasizes the need for physical education and the diet of the guardians, which should be in moderation (Badiou 114). Moderation is one of the key principles of education. Anything people indulge in, should be too much or too little. For Plato, this is the basis of knowledge (Badiou 138). According to Plato, the higher reason is associated with man's immortal soul. Therefore, the basis of education means achieving higher reason (Badiou 138).
