Essay Instructions:

Question 1 – What do you think?
The piece you read was part of Philippe Bourgois's book “In Search of Respect.”   Bourgois is an anthropologist who conducted an ethnography (became embedded in a community and lived with them) in Harlem, NY.  His writing ties complex sociological issues to everyday experiences and he often provides narratives that humanize these issues.  I am curious if you liked this reading?  Tell me what you learned and/or areas that you struggled to understand.
Question 2 – Apply theory.
Use one of the sociological theories provided in “Theoretical Explanations for Drug Use and Addiction” to discuss a portion of the chapter “Violating Apartheid in the United States” by Philippe Bourgois.  You can pick any portion of the text to analyze.  In your answer tell me what portion you are grappling with and what theory can help explain Bourgois's findings.
