The 1917 constitution defines the basic government system and political structure of Mexico. It is a federal nation with 31 states, each with its constitution, designed according to the national charter. Notably, the government structure consists of three branches: the executive, legislature, and judiciary.
During the 20th century, Mexico was a one-party state whereby the president controlled the entire system. Under the current structure, the president is elected on a six-year non-renewable term (Cortés 200).
