Language: A distinguishing feature of Homo sapiens sapiens.
Language plays a great role in the communication and exchange between the human species. However, the way language is used for communication by the different social groups relies on the cultural orientation of the group. The young ones have the ability to learn the culture of their group but this is achieved through communication and language is the ultimate manifestation of the communication process. Unlike other species, the Homo sapiens sapiens underwent a range of changes in a bid to fit into the world of competition for resources. Through this process they were able to develop their brains faster than other species, a factor which led to the development of speech and the ultimate result of language. Therefore, it is absolutely correct to say that language is a distinguishing feature of Homo sapiens sapiens.
Reading through the evolution of the Homo sapiens sapiens, it’s undoubtedly believable that the process of language for human communication has come a long way to be what it is today. Firstly, language came into being because of the abilities of our ancestors over 4-8 million years ago. Unlike other primates they had the ability to plan for their future. They had a memory that could keep the map of the landscape which was an important factor in helping them find food resources and safe places for survival. The other important factor was their ability to stay together not only for defense but as a strategy in helping them fight other primates in an effort to secure enough food. Their ability to cooperate helped them survive in the prevailing and dramatically changing environment. Just at this time they started developing adaptive strategies which led to rapid developments in their brains and the areas of speech began to enlarge. They later started using stone tools and other tools to hunt large animals in a sophisticated manner through cooperation. Other changes that emerged were the placement of the larynx and changes in the tongue position. Soon they started making sounds and more sophisticated sound patterns as a way of communication and this marked the beginning of language (Lecture 12).
