Introduction
Cultural practices influence the manner in which individuals live their lives. In India, for instance, many of the citizens are poor, and they lack the basic needs such as shelter, food, and clothing. Ironically, though, is the fact that one is likely to find a ragged farmer who is starving to death, but he owns a fat cow he cannot convert into a meal and spare his life. Cows are highly respected by the Hindus because they are a symbol of all living organisms. To them, spiritual values are more important than even the life of a human being. Expert’s reports indicate that cow worship is among the leading causes of death and extreme poverty in India. Although cows are highly respected in India, they do not contribute to the growth of the economy because they do not give meat or milk to the Indian people.
Summary of the Article
Agronomists who have been trained in America and Europe say that the taboo against cow slaughter only gives room for the survival of millions of animals which do not improve the lives of the Indian people. The animals do not give milk or meat, and all they do is compete for the few resources available. The cows are not managed in any organized manner and are likely to be found in all corners of the streets and even being a primary cause of traffic jam. In developed countries where farming methods largely depend on technology, the cows would be kept on a farm where it is easy to feed them and also keep track of their progress. Other than that they will also not be a cause of traffic jam in the major cities.
In a country like India where there are so many cows the population of oxen is expected to be very high, however, this is not the case as there 40 million fewer traction animals. Oxen and water buffalo are used to plow the land and there such a big deficit would mean the practice of Agriculture is not effective. A borrowing of the animals does not improve the situation because the rains may come before the animals finish plowing. For a peasant farmer in India, whose oxen fall sick, it could mean that they are likely to lose their lands as they have nothing to farm for them anymore.
