Gender Roles during the War
Men and women play different roles in the society. Despite the different wars fought by social institutions to have equal rights assigned to both genders, men and women have different responsibilities. Majority of the people in the world today feel that both men and women should be assigned the same roles using the popular slogan; ‘what a man can do a woman can do better.’ (Fuller 34). Proper analysis of this fact makes one realize that there is no truth in that statement; men and women may strive to have the same roles, but it is clear that they cannot perform everything. For instance, men sire children, but they cannot carry the pregnancy for nine months, it is only women who have that ability. From this example, it can be agreed that that it is impossible for women to do everything that men do and vice versa because our body structures do not allow us to do that. Man “considers the work he does in his office of factory as essential to the harmonious functioning of the world” and he is more “concerned with finding a loaf of bread” for his family (Milosz). Women, on the other side, are often victimized, “raped, tortured, beaten, and pressed into sexual servitude” during war (Sanford, Stefatos & Salvi 187). The statement is, however, applicable to the work place where both genders strive to be granted equal treatment and equal roles. The article by Fuller addresses all the issues encountered during the war and gives an analysis of the different situations and experiences for both men and women. The fact that the war changed the lives of many people gives us a scenario of what it was during those days. In the past, especially during the wars, men and women played different roles and the sharing of these roles made work easier as people would focus on their responsibilities and perform better.
The First World War for instance served as the basis for the establishment of various responsibilities divided among men and women. Both genders played main roles in ensuring that the successful results of the battle. ‘During this time, both men and women were involved in active war zones the assignment of different roles among the genders ensured that various tasks were completed within a particular time frame and gave each person time to rest in preparation for war in the following days.’ (Fuller 34). A majority of men served in the frontlines of the war as soldiers and some provided any type of labor required during the battle for instance the transportation of heavy machinery from one place to another. Women on the other hand, ensured that the men were comfortable during the way by cooking for them, cleaning their clothes and encouraging them to continue fighting for their respective countries. Additionally, men had odd jobs, according to (Milosz 64) ‘men and women change as soon as they know that the date of their execution has been fixed by a fat little man with shiny boots.’ The men during this time were the hangmen.
With the difference in age and varying strengths, some men were assigned the roles that ensured that the ones in the front lines received full sup...
