Gay and Lesbian Marriage
The definition of marriage, for the longest time in the constitution, stated that, "marriage consist only of the union of a man and a woman" (107th Congress, House - Judiciary Resolution 93). It generally declared that marriages between the same-sex such as gay or lesbian marriages are forbidden under the rule of law. There is a constant struggle to challenge this definition by the gay and lesbian community towards the legalization of same-sex marriage (Taylor). One of the most consistent sectors to go against gay and lesbian marriages is the religious community where they condemn the acceptance of society towards same-sex relations as these acts are always viewed as immoral (Ketell, 4). Additionally, according religious teachings, homosexuality goes against the law of the divine where the Christian churches only honors the right of a man and a woman to be married and not the abomination of same-sex unions (6). Although same-sex marriage used to be unacceptable around the world, countries such as The Netherlands, United States, and Taiwan, should be further studied as these countries greatly affected society’s acceptance towards gay and lesbian unions when they legalized same-sex marriage. In this paper, the day on which same-sex marriage was legalized in The Netherlands, US, and Taiwan will be revisited to analyze its potential impacts to the global community.
The first country is The Netherlands. This country was known to be the first to erase the limitation of marriage and granted the right of same-sex marriage to the homosexual community on April 1, 2001 (Taylor). This historic event was reported and heavily critiqued around the world where their action served as the starting point for other countries to follow in legalizing same-sex marriage (Taylor). In the report of Adam Taylor on The Washington Post in 2015, the effects of legalizing same-sex marriage after a few years showed no ill effects in the Netherland’s institution of marriage where most Dutch critics that opposed on 2001 reverted their point of view as its legalization was now seen as a good move (Taylor).
