Social Classes in High School
Most of the organizations are faced with the challenge of dealing with social groups. In this case, I have experienced different social groups in my high school life. Such groups had a lot of impact on the lives of the other students in both academically and outside the class environment. Among the subgroups were those of the popular students, the bright students, less bright students, and a basketball team.
The subgroup for the popular students consisted of the students who were from a rich background. Such students were able to manipulate the rest of the students into carrying out activities according to their priorities. In addition, the girls wore expensive attires and colognes hence making them be completely different from the rest of the students who were from less privileged backgrounds. In addition, the subgroup of the bright students obviously consisted of the students that came on the top of the class during exams. This group would engage in group discussions without involving the rest of the students. The less bright students had a feeling that the rest of the class was discriminating them. For example, in the case whereby students were obligated to form group discussions on their own, it was difficult for them to be included in discussions out of the believe that they were not going to bring in much contribution. Finally, another subgroup consisted of a team of male basketball players and a few ladies that they termed as their girlfriends. This was the most popular group within the school, and every student envied to be a part of them.
In regard to the basis for the group memberships, the popular students required that students should be neat and smartly dressed. Their style was an indication of class and needed to be talkative so as to fit in the group. This acted as a cut off factor for most of the students because a few of them were talkative and from well up families. As well, the group for the bright students required that a person be a top performer in the class. This could mean in all the subjects or a few of them.
