Mental health is a public health problem, yet the mental health care system in the US is overburdened, expensive and inaccessible. Around 1 in 5 American adults, which are approximately 43.7 million people, have mental health conditions, while there is increased rate problem among the youth including the risk of severe depression (Mental Health America). The problem with mental health issues is that they are many be undiagnosed, and the long-term effects affect the individuals, families and communities. Even as there is improved access to mental health care services, the mental health workforce shortage is a problem that persists (Mental Health America). Mental health care services have been improving in the US, but more needs to be done to improve mental health care policies and outcomes.
Improving the better mental health care would improve access to adequate care and reduce barriers among those seeking the services. This is especially when there are signs of potentially dangerous behavior. Including violence, self-harm, and the risk of endangering the lives of other people, and sometimes mental health issues occur together with substance abuse disorders. As such, when assessing risk indicators, the mental health history like indicators of aggressive, impulsive or dangerous behavior should be considered. There is recognition that better mental health care targeting people living with mental health and substance use disorders would improve the lives of those affected significantly.
Since effective mental health services are linked to living mentally healthier lives, various options have been explored, including targeting at high risk of mental health problems like those already receiving treatment for anxiety, depression, psychotic disorders, personality disorders, and substance abuse disorders.
