Essay 1: Public Opinion on Political System in the US (Chapter 5)
Public opinion is the common view of the citizens of a nation (“Chapter 5: Public Opinion” 145). The US citizens have various attitudes towards the problems that face the country. Some people support the government on how it handles national issues, while others oppose the strategies applied by the government. Therefore, the work covers the various factors that affect public opinion on economic, social, and political issues affecting the US.
The first factor that affects peoples’ opinion is the alignment to a specific political party. The US has two political parties that people align their political views towards; Democrats and Republicans. Democrats are conservatives; they believe that resources should be equally distributed, while Republicans hold that those who work hard deserve a greater portion of the nation’s wealth. Hence, Republicans support the unequal distribution of wealth where the gap between the rich and the poor is very large (“Chapter 5: Public Opinion” 147).
Another factor that impacts peoples’ view is the emotional response to the events in the country. For instance, the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) terrorist group attacked the US people in Paris, most people proposed for military intervention (“Chapter 5: Public Opinion”
146). The group posted several videos that became viral on the social media showing how they slaughter Christians, journalists, and soldiers. Moreover, women are more responsive to emotions than men. Hence, the emotions of citizens to events in the country have an impact on their opinion.
Finally, social networking and family also affect people’s opinion on the political party to support. Some people spend their time talking to their children about politics, which can have an impact on such kids in the future.
