In 2015, there were approximately 21.3 million refugees, 65.3 million who had been displaced, but only 107,000 had been resettled (UNHCR). Many of the refugees resettled in the US have been victims of persecution, conflicts and political violence (Long). As the number of displaced people in the world rises, the refugee crisis is a pressing issue more than ever before. Refugees trying to escape human suffering encounter more problems with efforts to resettle them being slow while also being challenged by political leaders. Contrary to what the mass media portray most of the countries hosting refugees are developing nations, and their movements in such countries is restricted. The US should be more proactive in dealing with the refugee crisis.
Recently the media has highlighted the refugee crisis and the human cost of violence. Turkey holds the most number of refugees from Syria, while some have tried moving into Europe. The 2015 Pairs attack claimed by ISIS/ Islamic State was carried out by individuals with European passports, but there were Syrian passports processed in Greece that were found at the scene of the terrorist attack (Long). Clearly, terrorists have taken advantage of the broken refugee and asylum system in the EU as they seek to use any route available to launch attacks (Long). It is noteworthy that there were calls for the halting of refugee resettlement, but what was ignored is that millions of Syrians had already left their homes and were staying in neighboring countries
