The most similar characteristic from both the movie and the book is the fact that both characters grew to become very prominent religious leaders. They were both Christians who came from a humble background and rose to become great influential people. In his book, Mark Galli traces the adventure of the life of Francis from his time as a youth to the time he becomes an outstanding Christian leader of great influence and passion. In the movie, Francis grows from a simple village person that everybody thought was an idiot to become one of the most respected religious leaders of his generation. From both the movie and the book both characters have to prove people wrong for instance the village idiot became a great preacher and man of God.
Another similarity between the two is the fact that both the book and the movie try to show the audience the real man and the world he lived in. The image that is portrayed in both is not the popular imagination of a romantic free spirit it is the actual details of the life and time of the man ("Glimpses of Francis of Assisi, from Mark Galli", 2017). They show us a complex individual who is contemptuous and above all seeks to praise God and dedicate his life to Him. Francis in both the book and the movie has to prove people wrong in that he initially begins doing the Lord’s work many do not take him seriously, but then he becomes the best religious leader of his time.
In the book, it has been stated that he was seated at his father’s shop minding his own business when a beggar came begging in the name of God. He got angry and asked the beggar to leave. After the beggar had left he felt guilty for having asked the beggar to leave, so he follows him and gives him some money (Diener, 2013). The fact that he was sitting in his father’s shop indicates that he came from an able family. On the hand, in the movie, Francis comes from a poor background. His father is a drunkard, and his mother who is haggard has a lot on her mind to worry about where Francis is going and what he is up to. These are two contradicting sides about both men. Moreover, in the book, the author indicates that at a certain time Francis’s friends asked him to sponsor drinks for the evening although they did not ask him directly. In the movie, there is no indication that Francis before his conversion can afford to buy drinks for his friends. He is widely regarded as the village idiot, and nobody believes he will amount to something in the future. A good example of n incidence that cements his position as the village idiot is the scenario where he loses control of a donkey, and it drags him through vineyards causing destruction (the reluctant saint The Story of St. Joseph of Cupertino, 1962).
In the movie, Francis is considered as the ...
