In Dr. King’s Letter from a Birmingham Jail, Christian tradition was a major source of Dr. King’s ideas about equality. Read Romans 2:14-15. What is the meaning of the idea of things being written on the heart? How does this tie into what Dr. King wrote? Can you tie this idea into our discussion about the Ford Pinto in any way? How?
Things being written on the heart imply that all people have conscience regardless of whether they are familiar with the law or not. Conscience is an inner voice that differentiates right from wrong. Therefore, conscience will always bother an individual if he/she does something wrong. The same applies to morality because all individuals are morally obligated to adhere to just laws (King, 2012). As a result, moral obligation and conscience go hand in hand because they are both internal feelings that drive people to do the right thing. Dr. King’s letter and Romans 2:14-15 are well reflected in the Ford Pinto case. It is immoral and against the conscience of a reasonable individual to allow people to die or be seriously injured because it would cost too much to prevent it.
