The meaning of “God calls us to be spiritual athletes”
God compares life of Christians to that of athletes and calls Christians to have discipline that athletes have in a particular sport they are participating in. However, if Christians put effort in behaving morally and living according to God’s commands, the world will be a better place to live as there will not be punishments from God. Christians are called by God to fight ‘the fight of faith and not relax’, that is, they are called to run a race of faith. Moreover, athletes are said to be strenuous, they demand self sacrifice, they undergo through hard training and they put their full energy on sports. This is why God calls Christians to be spiritual athletes not physical athletes.
