The Chinese Lunar Year
The Chinese New Year, which is also known as the Spring Festival, is the most significant holiday recognized by the Chinese people (Refkin and Borgla 34). It marks the first day of the month as determined by the Chinese traditions before they used the Gregorian calendar. This first day was originally set out as a day for prayer to the gods who provided bountiful land for the Chinese people, who depended heavily on agriculture for sustenance. Currently, it is the longest Chinese holiday in history, lasting 15 days, without counting the New Year’s Eve (Marsico 7). It is usually called the Spring Festival since it falls between respective solstices and equinoxes, which is between December and March.
Every Chinese Lunar Year has a symbol associated with it in the form of a Chinese Zodiac. These are characterized by various animal signs each with a significant meaning. The signs include the monkey, snake, rabbit, and dragon and other animals. Therefore, the year 2019 is known as Year of the Pig, which started on the 5th of February and is expected to end on January 24th, 2020 (Stellhorn np).
According to the Chinese Zodiac, the pig is associated with wealth and good conduct although it is not considered very smart or hardworking. One belief commonly used to explain the significance of these animals lies in a tale about Buddha (Asif and Ali 2). Buddha is believed to have set out a challenge to which he promised sacred gifts to any animal that would pay homage and pledge loyalty to him. It is said that only 12 animals listened to his word, and each was given part of the 12 years of the zodiac.
The Chinese Lunar Year describes the period between 12 lunar months as recognized by the traditional Chinese calendar. This period, which is the first day of the lunar month, falls only between January 21st and February 20th. It culminates in an annual festival celebrated in China to mark the start of a new year in the usual Chinese calendar. This calendar has 13 months in Chinese year and is consequently between 30 to 50 days behind the commonly used calendar, which is known as the Gregorian calendar (Martzloff 74).
