The United States of America’s (USA) government should not assist workers who lose their jobs because of changing trade patterns. Indeed, it does everything to eliminate trade deficits, and that does not mean that the government wants to hurt its citizens. For example, international trade accounts for the creation of numerous jobs and the destruction of others. About 5 million jobs are created in the USA, and almost a similar number are destroyed (Blinder 398). People should not only focus on the adverse effects of changing trade patterns, but they need to appreciate the positive outcomes. The most significant thing that the government should do is to ensure that the majority of people who lose their jobs due to the change in international trade patterns are considered for the new opportunities created.
If the government wants to assist, it should help all employees who lose their jobs regardless of whether the cause is changing trade patterns or technological advancement. All workers who lose their jobs are citizens and should be treated equally. Besides, trade deficits do not contribute to significant job gains or losses (Blinder 399). However, the government should try to create more employment opportunities so that Americans who lose their jobs can be employed in the newly created jobs.
