Summative Assessment
Students are required to submit an essay/project towards the end of the term on a topic approved by the instructor. The essay/project incorporates data analyses, as well as theoretical discussions. It must also include a written French reference source. The Department considers the essay/project the summative assessment for the course. To pass the course, a student must
a) Receive a grade of 60% or higher in the course overall, and
b) Receive a grade of 60% or higher on the final essay/project.
If a student does not fulfill both requirements, the maximum grade that the student receives will be 50%

2- An article from a French-language news source such as Les Affaires.

An online archive is available through the Grande bibliothèque website. I encourage you to get a library card; it’s free and available to all Quebecers. Use the EUREKA database.

Discussion of an Economic Issue
Debates have raged over whether migrants have any benefit or positive impact on the host nations. Some people believe that host nations are financially strained when they open doors for migrants. Others, like me, believe that migrants do strain the host nations but only in the short-term. This topic has led to a lot of discussions between my boyfriend and me. He tends to believe that migrants are financially straining host nations. He outlines issues of unemployment rates going up and government expenditure increasing as a result of an increase in the number of migrants. I, on the other hand, believes that migrants lead to some economic gains after some time. This paper, therefore, seeks to determine the truthfulness of my boyfriend’s claims. Do migrants financially strain host nations? Should people be worried about their jobs and the state of the economy if a host nation decides to open its doors to more migrants?
The answer to the two questions above is no. Well, aside from the subjective fear that people have towards migrants, there is nothing to fear because migrants positively impact the economy and do not come for the jobs of the native citizens. The issue of migrants and their impact on the host nations is quite personal because people close to us share some of the thoughts raised in this paper. Some people are genuine in their concerns and are looking for answers. Others, however, are simply going with the wave and sharing the opinions of the popular sides. My boyfriend, Jacob, is among the group that believes that migrants are bad for the host nation. He holds the belief that even though focus ought to be on finding them better environments, these should not be permanent.
