Servant and holistic leadership
Holistic leaders integrate values into leadership because leadership is perceived as a reflection of the spirit, body, and mind (Dhiman, p 5). The integration is based on trust and strong relationships with colleagues. At the workplace, trust promotes teamwork and gets work done effectively. Holistic leaders understand the need to share important information at the appropriate time. Therefore, they are transparent in the way they communicate and act. Although character matters, a leader cannot be effective without competence. Holistic leaders are capable of crafting plans and formulate ways of executing those plans. On the other hand, a servant leader is a servant first. Therefore, servant leaders are caring and this trait is promoted by the desire to serve (Greenleaf, p 20). Servant leaders are also good listeners and they do it in a nonjudgmental and receptive manner. They listen because they can only serve after understanding what their followers need. Lastly, servant leaders put other people first and avoid promoting themselves. As a result, they are humble and understand that leadership is not all about them but about the people they lead (Sipe & Don, p 21).

According to the servant leadership theory, Nelson Mandela presents a perfect model of a servant leader. Mandela was born in 1918 and was the first African president of South Africa. In his biography, Mandela is described as “a humble servant who cares and with the desire to see his people enjoy equality” (Malan, p 11). Mandela’s listening skills are unmatched as he numerously passed through the streets of South Africa to listen to his people. Nevertheless, it is his humble nature that distinguishes him from other leaders.
