The East Indian Company (EIC) started in 1599 and was initially an English company. It was founded to carry out trade mainly in the Indian Ocean ports and the East Indies. In later days, the company became a British joint-stock organization that expanded its trading grounds to China. The onset of the 19th century revealed a large and powerful company with the capability of waging war or making peace in any region in the East (Dalrymple). The company’s power extended to large private armies that were unmatched by almost all nations. The administration, coupled with a sophisticated civil service; large, strong, and impregnable. With an expenditure four times the total amount produced by the British government alone, its influence was unequaled. The company, until now four hundred years later, has left an indelible mark on the world with people finding it hard to compare the currently powerful companies to the EIC.
