Read the case study "Howard Roark and the Ghost of Admiral Rickover," which I and two colleagues published in Cross Cultural Management. 1. How do the organizational contexts of Merck and the nuclear navy influence the importance of the following managerial skills to Howard Roark's career: self-awareness, interpersonal communication, power and influence, conflict resolution, and teamwork. You will need to refer to concepts in Chapters One, Four, Five, Seven, and Nine. The answer should be about one page long.
2. Explain how the contingency theories of Fred Fiedler, which I discussed in connection with the discussion boards, or the path-goal model described in the textbook, explain the differences in the kinds of skills Howard Roark needs in the nuclear navy and at Merck. Strictly following standard protocols meets the power-based competition. It is a real struggle when the standard protocol followed for years of service met a sudden change caused by a career shift. Especially when the career moved from public to private firm, particularly from military to the marketing field. Howard Roark is a sales agent working in a firm called Merck. Howard is an average employee struggling to meet the company’s standard performance as a salesperson, had adopted Admiral Rickover’s management, and had trouble applying it to his job (Langbert, Stanchina, and Grunewald). According to the study, Rickover as the meticulous creator of the nuclear navy was so passionate about his job, securing people and the place, steadfastly implementing the orders, and most of all making sure that even the smallest chance of nuclear accident was gone (p. 201). Individual efforts and competitiveness are highly prioritized, giving chances to the trainees to expose one’s potential for the duty. Howard then decided to change their career and chose the marketing field bringing this kind of mindset. As a sales agent, Howard has a great skill dealing with his customers that’s why he got a lot of customers in just three weeks (p. 195).
