The author argued that the way to deal with the poor Irish people was to eat the children and this satirical piece highlights how the economic situation had deteriorated that even marriage did not offer the desired benefits. In mentioning that the parents eat or sell their children to be eaten, this may indicate that the author satirized and parodied the rich and English treatment of the Irish (Chowdhury 135). “That these children are seldom the fruits of marriage, a circumstance not much regarded by our savages, therefore, one male will be sufficient to serve four females” (Swift). Ignoring the existence of human nature and the possibility of relationship between the people is one point of view in the article. The author also offers short-term solutions to reduce poverty, destitution and overpopulation.
“Savages, children are seldom the fruit of marriage” and “men would be come as fond of their wives, during the time of their pregnancy” (Swift). The people are represented as being uncivilized who cannot even relate like normal human beings. The author only offered a temporary solution and yet the problem of poverty is one that affects differs parts of the society. In any case, when the parents lose their children it is more likely that this will affect the relationship between the couples. As such, the ‘solutions’ are not feasible to address poverty and the population problems affecting the Irish society.
