For this paper, you will select no more than 10 consecutive lines for a close reading. Your reading should be an interpretation of—in other words, an argument about— that specific passage. What does this passage say or do? And how does it say or do it? A successful argument will have a thesis statement, which lays out a claim (about a theme, a character, a situation, etc.) you will prove in your reading. The claim you make in your thesis must be open to debate and your task is to support this claim with specific textual evidence and thoughtful analysis. Do not do any outside research for this paper; the point is to show your attentiveness to the literary language you have selected. This should be your own interpretation backed up solely by the words on the page.
Select your passage with an idea in mind (understanding that your idea might change as you look at the text). For instance, you might want to talk about gender relations or perhaps how character X's perception of him/herself is different than other characters' perceptions of character X. Find a passage that touches on your idea. Then study the passage closely and refine your thesis to make it more specific to the passage.
Start thinking about your passage and what you might write about it immediately. You must get approval for your thesis/idea from me via email or by coming to office hours no later than Monday, Feb. 17 so you have enough time to write a thoughtful paper.

Thesis: If we do not become one with nature, it will fight back as the world becomes overwhelmed.
In the sonnet, the theme that is most striking is that with regard to the way that humans have changed in the modern age. In the wake of development, the humans have come to lose their connection with nature. All of the natural resources are now at the mercy of the human beings as they seek to satisfy their temporary urges that they have created. The simple pleasures that come from the material things that we have around us have come in place of the love that once existed for nature. This is why the poet relates to the fact that most all of human kind has given their hearts away and no longer takes nature to be their own as they embrace their spending habits.
In the wake of the technological and manufacturing development that started in the 1800s as the poem was being written, the cultural values changed. People care much more for the little pleasure that they can get from the developments. It is for this reason that most of the humans’ habits are tied to their material world rather than the sole source of the raw materials. Most of the efforts that revolve around manufacturing goods and delivering the services in this economy cause a lot more damage to nature than the efforts that are geared towards correcting the detrimental effects. With industrialization came the waste, which is ever soaring at an alarming rate.As more goods and services come into the seen, the more the pollution effects associated with waste and the more the depletion of the resources in nature. As it is not many people really care about they are having on the nature around them provided that they satisfy their immediate needs. In the urge to make up for time and make more money we spend all the energy. In today’s world the people want to accumulate more stuff that they actually need.
In the fourth line the artist says that ‘We have given our hearts away, a sordid boon!’ We no longer see nature as something that belongs to us or rather as something that we can own, as we are overwhelmed by the need to create another utopia away from the great elements of nature.
