  • ProQuest News and Newspapers database: The New York Times (1980 – present)

  • ProQuest News and Newspapers database: The Wall Street Journal (1984 – present)

Additional resources, located on this week's University Library Readings page. Click on Literary Reference Center Plus, and type in the following keywords.

  • African-American History Online

  • American History Online

  • American Indian History Online

  • American Women's History Online

  • History Study Center

  • Issues and Controversies in American History

Part 1:

Choose an event covered by The New York Times or The Wall Street Journal from the ProQuest databases located in the University Library.

Use at least one article from either of these newspapers and one additional source from the "additional resources" list as references for writing your paper. Study these articles in preparation for writing.

Write a 525- to 700-word article in a literary journalism style covering the selected event, emphasizing scenes over personal commentary.

Note: Articles from The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, and some other resources on the list would have been written in a traditional news style, which tends to avoid undue slanting or editorializing of the facts of the story. Conversely, in your literary journalism article, you may find it necessary to take a stand to tell the story with greater impact.

Format your paper consistent with MLA guidelines.

Part 2 - Reflection *add to bottom of your article

Write a 300-word reflection of your literary journalism article, comparing the coverage in The New York Times or The Wall Street Journal to your article. Include your thoughts on the following:

  • What choices did you make in your article that would not be appropriate for news journalism?

  • Are there any facts or details in the more traditional newspaper-style articles that you chose to minimize or leave out of your article because of its literary journalism style? If so, why? If not, was it a problem to get them to fit your narrative?

  • What ethical challenges do writers of each type of journalistic writing face that the other type does not?

Format your paper consistent with MLA guidelines.

Submit the two reflections as one Microsoft® Word document please.

The Brutal Killing of George Floyd by Police
Event
A Black Man named, George Floyd, fell victim to police brutality on May 25, 2020, in Minneapolis. According to the news on Wall Street Journal, Derek Chauvin, a police officer from the white race, kept kneeling on his neck unless he stopped saying, “I cannot breathe” (Emont & Wen). George Floyd got killed by the police during his arrest on the charge of using a false bill of only $20. The brutal death of a middle-aged African-American and its response spread on social media like fire in the jungle.
The worldwide community of blacks, civil-rights activists and black art’s lovers around the world came fervently reacted to the death of George Floyd. They began protests, rallies, memes and marches through the power of social media. The snapshots and footage of the incident of killing him covered all social media sites forming a strong appeal to antiracism. Not only the black race, but their white counterparts also began to campaign out crying for social justice. Emily Little, a white lady, with the support of 300 followers, organized a rally in the wake of Goerge Floyd’s brutal murder by police (Higham). Toosheyah Butler, an Israeli Negro woman, also organized a rally to give respect to Floyd (Emont & Wen). With 25,000 protestors in Munich and France and around ten thousand in Australia and Sydney, the antiracism campaign is growing faster after the tragic incident of Floyd’s death (Emont & Wen).
Meanwhile, the death of Mr. Dungay whom the guards killed in 2015 got refreshed in the minds of the protesters as both killings are based on racism with similarity in last words of the victims, “I can’t breathe” (Higham). Finally, the event is impactful on not only the civil rights movement and human rights organizations around the world, but ordinary people on social media who never organized any protest. They are using the power of social sites to galvanize others to join their roars and rallies against social discrimination and inhuman attitude toward the black race.
Although the killing of George Floyd is a historical incident of racial discrimination and a proof of the shattered American Dream of social justice and equality, the Twitter’s approach “manipulated media” is considerable (Emont & Wen). There are several photos on Twitter shared by millions of the subscribers each day showing Derek Chauvin with a red cap captioning, “MAKE WHITES GREAT AGAIN” (Emont &Wen). It depicts the propagandist nature of social media posts based on a real incident with real suffering. However, they can change their meaning through manipulation and quickly accessibly editing tools in this digital age, in my opinion. To fan racism, which is already a burning question for international human rights law, through social media, which covers the worldwide population, is quickest and most comfortable for propagandists. It does not mean that I favou...
