Persepolis and Watchmen roles and visual representations of female characters
Marjane Satrapi is the narrator in Persepolis and recounts her experience from her native Iran to the West from the 1970s as a child. Alan Moore’s Watchmen normalizes sexual aggression towards women and even when the female characters are independent they play a secondary role to the men. Silk Spectre I and Silk Spectre II play prominent roles in the Watchmen as superheroines, but they also embrace their sexuality compared to the male characters. The graphic representation of women and men in the superhero comics is different depending on who is the author and the themes of the comic book. In most cases, male writers and creators are likely to focus on the hypersexualization of female characters, while female writers give girls and women a more prominent role in their stories.
Women are capable of making positive changes in the two comics, but Silk Spectre I focuses on male attention unlike Satrapi who wants independence. Satrapi returns to Iran as an adult, and finds that censorship is rife in the Islamic nation and women play a secondary role to men. Persepolis presents female characters as persons who seek freedom and equality where breaking the social rules is empowering. Even though, Silk Spectre I is one of the defenders of law, order and morality who protects and defends the people, even as she is almost a victim of sexual violence.
