Distracted driving has rapidly grown to be a threat to road safety. The rapid technological advancements are making almost everyone across the world own a mobile phone and with the emerging introduction of “in-vehicle” communication systems, the problem is likely to escalate over the years (World Health Organization). Everyday a lot of road accidents occur in roads across the world as a result of people using phones while driving. Research on the various causes of road accidents have listed phones as the leading factor. These studies have also demonstrated the use of phones while driving puts the drivers at a higher risk of crushing. Despite the dangers of phones, people still use their phones because they want to be keep in touch with their friends or family members. With the emergence of hand-free communication systems, people still believe that they are safe because they can drive with their two hands. Moreover, most people argue that phones are unavoidable in emergency situations hence people can use them while driving. Although, the use of phones while driving is being supported by many, there is enough evidence that shows it distracts the drivers.
Most people who depend on phones such as businessmen to work argue that they have to be always available on phone so that their businesses can keep running. This habit of using phones while driving creates dangerous situations that may cause accidents. Handling business issues through phone while driving is dangerous because it may cause emotional reactions that can cause the driver to lose focus on the road causing an accident. The conversations they have through the phones might upset them resulting in them losing control over the vehicle (Klauer et al.).
