Use of Plot in Short Stories
Plot is a succession of proceedings that structure a story and consists of the start, middle and the finish. In James Joyce`s "Araby", an unknown narrator who stays with the aunt speaks of being in a set of street boys and introduces a girl who enthralls his thoughts although he hardly ever speak with her. The story ends when he plans to bring her something from an event he attends but in vain; he does not see her again. A writer can form two kinds of plots: the first one being a unified plot where by a narrative is sensible, comprises of a protagonist and takes place in a single place, more often than not in a short width of time, like few hours or a day.
The second type of plot is the episodic plot where a story has a location, a leading role, conflict and occurs in a longer period of time and flashback may be used to give details of unknown background. An example of such a lengthy short story is T. Coraghessan Boyle`s Greasy Lake which focuses on a night where three guys: Jeff, Digby, and the storyteller occurred upon a vehicle that had been parked at Greasy Lake and the events occurred three days keen on summer holiday.ΓΒ
