The USA Government Should Limit the Number of Guns
Who kills people, guns or people? The answer to this question is critical in the debate regarding guns in a polarized America. One side holds that guns are critical for self-preservation and hence an essential tool. The other side of the divide sees guns as a menace that compromises the safety of the members of the public. The mass media is awash with news about mass shooting incidences. The citizens are alarmed, grieve and call for immediate action. Often, minor legislation passes, but real transformation is rarely seen. While guns are critical in self-preservation of Americans, the government needs to limit the number of guns to minimize instances of gun-related violence.
Prominent writers, Charlotte Alter, Haley Sweetland Edward, and Philip Elliott, in an article appearing in the Time magazine on October 5, 2017, make a thought-provoking statement regarding the availability of guns: “We have decided that grenade launchers should not be widely available; why should we not say the same for devices that allow bullets to be fired at a rate of more than 400 rounds per minute?” Their statement raises questions on why the U.S. government has been reluctant in limiting the number of guns despite their adverse effects. The three writers have a wealth of information on the issue, and if anyone is qualified to show the negative implications of guns, then it is them.
