When the English colonists arrived in the United States, they were not focused on supporting slavery by forcing Africans to provide forced labor. It is critical to note that by the early seventeenth century, different organizations had been established by the colonists in America and helped in trading enslaved people to the English colonies. For example, it is approximated that by 1713, the Royal African Company had bout bought nearly 125,000 captives from the African coast and the Americas (Barrett). The British colonists adopted and invested in the slave trade in the eighteenth century because it had become a lucrative business where the colonizers would buy and transport the slaves from West Africa to colonies in North and South America.
Besides, the desire to have cheap labor influenced the colonists to support slavery. This is critical as the colonies were focused on producing large quantities of goods for European consumption. This was necessary since certain American crops such as sugar and rice were not grown in Europe, and importing such goods from the New World was considered more profitable. The colonists justified their actions to support this system by asserting that a vast amount of labor was needed to make the plantations economically beneficial. Additionally, sugarcane plantations necessitated a large number of laborers, and this made the planters to force African servants into forced labor.
Besides, the reliance on the convicted persons for labor was considered unreliable since it would not meet the planters' growing needs. This promoted the British colonists' involvement in the triangular trade of the enslaved Africans whose supply was deemed inexhaustible. Most importantly, it is critical to comprehend that after the slave trade was abolished in Britain, millions of Africans were transported into British colonies in various areas such as North and South America, where the provided free forced labor.
