Below we have outlined a historical timeline of LGBT struggle with special focus on major events or movements. 1924 Henry Gerber founded the first ever gay organization in Chicago, Society for Human Rights. 1950 Mattachine Society founded by Harry Hay, first groups fighting for gay rights. April 27, 1953 President Dwight D. Eisenhower declared homosexual people a security threat and bans them from working in federal government after signing an executive order. June 28, 1969 The start of gay rights movements after police raided on Stonewall Inn in NY City. January 1, 1973 Same-sex marriages face ban in the state of Maryland (Byne 2). 1973 Lamda Legal, first legal firm to represent and protect the rights of gays and lesbians. 1974 Kathy Kozachenko was the very first LGBT from the United States to be elected to public office. 1974 Elaine Noble, a first gay candidate for the State office. January 14, 1975 A first federal bill was presented with an aim to address discrimination on the basis of on sexual orientation, but it did not go through the Judiciary Committee. 1977-1981 Billy Crystal openly portrays a gay character for the first time on prime time TV. January 9, 1978 Harvey Milk, first gay person to openly work in the Californian political office before Dan White murdered him. October 14, 1979 Washington streets flooded by approximately 75000-125000 LGBT people marching for their rights.
