Themes refer to ideas that a novel or a narrative of a novel possesses. They explain why the author wrote the novel. On several occasions, novels have shared themes because they mirror the events in the society. La Ronde and All Quiet Western in Western Front are two of the common films whose theme focuses on the nature of life and its ability to transcend the role of class.
Social rankings and hierarchy are part of the society’s organization. The boundary among people from different classes often determines their interactions and puts barriers on whether one group should interact with another one or not. These classes define the sub-cultural behaviors and specifies the roles that the individuals play in the society. An individual’s social class and their background equips them with the relevant skills and attitudes needed for the specific role that they play in the society (Manstead). Society features a lot of incidents and undertakings and no matter how difficult the role is, there must be an individual responsible for doing it. Consequently, there are high and mighty social class and there are also those that are lowly categorized. This essay provides an analysis on the extent in which class determines events in the society as depicted in two novels, Ra Londe, and All Quitet in the Western Front.
La Ronde is a French name that is assigned to the play, which was originally known through a German name “Riegen”, shows the controversial nature of the play that is characterized by thought-provoking sexual themes. The author scrutinizes the aspects of sexual morality and social class. The characters in the play proceed with their daily activities, which are characterized by sexual encounters with partners stretching across all society levels. For example, there is the interaction between the whore and the soldier, the parlor maid, the young gentleman, the young wife, the poet, and many others (Schnitzler). What all these characters do not know is that they are all linked. The author, in this case, does an excellent job in showing how the sexual immorality transgresses all classes and social boundaries. There are no limits as to who sleeps with who. Instead, people sleep with each other across the board irrespective of their social classes.
All Quiet on the Western Front also exhibits the limitless nature of immorality in the same way that La Ronda does. In the novel, there are several instances that are characterized by a decline of morality. For example, there is an incident where Paul Baumer has to kill a solider in a shell hole. There is also a situation where Paul has to lie to his mother and his dead friend, Kemmerich’s mother, and an instance in which Paul and Kat are forced to beat a recruit unconscious to prevent him from leaving the trench. The characters also suffer some misfortunes. Kemmerich dies, Westhus is dying, Martens does not have legs, Max is dead and many more challenges (Remarque 65).
