Compare and Contrast the Theme of Love in Dantes Inferno and the Lais of Marie De France
It is captivating to analyze the similarities and differences in the ways Marie De France and Dantes Inferno impart their audience about their views on life. The two elicit a rather similarly contrasting perspective about romantic love. Dante, like Marie De France, employs unique literary forms. The latter perceives ideas from a feminine perspective and incorporates her feminine characters in her work more often than does Dante. For instance, she notes that Francesca is the only woman in hell that can be allowed to speak (Ihor 1). In total, Dante only mentions sixteen women in the subterranean journey, out of which nine are in limbo, and five out of the remaining seven lines in Francesca’s circle of Hell. Besides, Dante demonstrates throughout the play that women are mere elements of a tragic love triangle. On the contrary, Marie De France presents women as having grace and character throughout her comedy.
However, both Marie and Dante condemn adulterous relationships between a woman and a man, even though the degree to which the two depict what constitutes this type of engagement differs. Dante, on one hand, cites ancient or mythical stories about tragic lovers as a way of reiterating the notion that people who do not heed and remember the past, are condemned to repeat it. On the other hand, Marie’s construal of romantic love in Guigemar is similar to Paolos and Francesca’s “love” in many aspects, although it is quite different from Dantes Inferno’s perspective.
