The story appeared in Harper's Magazine in 1937and published in the 1938 collection The Long Valley. The story has a setting in California and tells the story of Elisa Allen and her husband Henry Allen. She is 35 years and very good in keeping her garden. The reader is made to understand that the two strangers were business men who came to bought Henry steers. Tinker also came into limelight, a character that has been used to portray feminism while he interacted with Elisa. According to Dahbany-Miraglia 25, feminist refers to efforts made by varied individuals in the society especially females to have equal rights in a society dominated by males. The major sectors that are sought after include political, economical, cultural, religion as well as sexually. It is no doubt John Steinbeck bring this issue clearly in his piece of art. The work is a clear indication of a society setting that has no place for women who are smart, hardworking ambitious and attractive.
