Name: University: Course: Tutor: Date: Thematic Essay The essay is a critical analysis of how feminist is used by John Steinbeck in his work, ‘Chrysanthemums’. Chrysanthemums. The story appeared in Harper's Magazine in 1937and published in the 1938 collection The Long Valley. The story has a setting in California and tells the story of Elisa Allen and her husband Henry Allen. She is 35 years and very good in keeping her garden. The reader is made to understand that the two strangers were business men who came to bought Henry steers. Tinker also came into limelight, a character that has been used to portray feminism while he interacted with Elisa. According to Dahbany-Miraglia 25, feminist refers to efforts made by varied individuals in the society especially females to have equal rights in a society dominated by males. The major sectors that are sought after include political, economical, cultural, religion as well as sexually. It is no doubt John Steinbeck bring this issue clearly in his piece of art. The work is a clear indication of a society setting that has no place for women who are smart, hardworking ambitious and attractive. It is worth mentioning that the issue of feminisms usually comes to play as a result of mistreatment women undergo all p0ver the world. At the beginning of the story, we are told how Elisa was dressed; she was in "a man’s black hat pulled low down over her eyes, clodhopper shoes, a figured print dress almost completely covered by a big corduroy apron…" (Steinbeck 1879) thus the protagonist is being suppressed in terms of emotions as well as mentally for a simple reason of being a woman. Despite the fact that women are successful being in the society in this case Elisa, her husband Henry although seems to appreciate her gift clearly makes the reader understand that he is the boss in the house (Dahbany-Miraglia 18).
