The Way to Wealth
A former president of the United States, Benjamin Franklin promoted the values of hard work, care for the environment and enterprise. Apart from setting the trend for posterity, tolerance and diplomacy, he also endorsed inclusivity. He believed that everyone had an equal chance of bringing positive change to the great nation of America (Franklin 97). Like the Native Americans, he believed in collective responsibility, industriousness and using the natural resources—mainly land— productively and sustainably. While Benjamin Franklin may have adopted a different approach to leadership and entrepreneurship, he shared most of the values of the Native Americans.
The Way to Wealth exposes some of the virtues that Franklin endorsed. To begin with, he observed that the regime imposed high taxes on the citizens. Secondly, Franklin realized that people could turn around the situation instead of complaining. He reckoned that they could work harder and avoid too much sleep, which hurt productivity. To emphasize how sleep affected productivity, he said, “How much more than is necessary do we spend in sleep! forgetting that the sleeping fox catches no poultry” (Franklin 1). In other words, he suggested that unless people worked hard, they would not be wealthy. To encourage them, Franklin his fellow American citizens to till the land, grow corn and benefit from the earth. Even as they utilized the land, he advised them to preserve for posterity. Since Franklin hated laziness, he urged his folks to have a purpose in life and set a precedent for others to follow. To underscore his point, he quotes, “While laziness travels so slowly, that poverty soon overtakes him” (Franklin 2). In other words, he suggests that laziness amounts to poverty. Therefore, Franklin appreciated people who worked hard, fended for the families and instilled in their children the value of hard work.
