The Issue of Class in La Ronde
The play ‘‘La Ronde ‘’, by Arthur Schnitzler explains the dynamics of social intercourse and class ideology through numerous encounters between pairs of characters introduced before and after a sexual encounter. As the author portrays men and women involved in these dynamic, similar behaviors and themes begin to exist. These behaviors and themes control the attributes in the play as the characters engage in the social dance that occurs prior to sex. Since these attributes appear to be consistent throughout the play, it is safe to state that Schnitzler is insinuating that the behaviors depict human nature than manifest when the man and woman participate in this social dance. Evidently, Schnitzler is portraying this nature to be constant because men and women of dissimilar backgrounds and socioeconomic classes exhibit these traits. As these characters are confronted with the likelihood of sex, their actions become devious as they pursue sexual relations. The play offers social commentary on how sexual relations have changed the boundaries of class by highlighting the behaviors and morals of characters in society.
From the play, one can note that sexual desire is one of the most significant evolutionary tendencies of a man that is said to challenge the class distinctions. Arguably, this desire can trigger social problems. Society consists of different social classes. These classes present with varying characteristics. So, if a member of a society intends to treat everyone within a specific class as a collective entity, each entity would display a different personality. However, because of the influence of sexual desire, one's behavior would reflect that of their social class. That is to say; they would be acquiescent to their sexual desires. It is also true that every social class has similar values, such as integrity and honesty, that control one's behaviors in society.
In this context, one may reason that if the operative disparity between society members is the respective social class, then the dissolution of the class distinction may cause an individual's overarching values that affect their actions. Therefore, when characteristics in Schnitzler's play pursue the features of sexual intercourse and ignore the differences in class, then they face the conflict of remaining true to the social altruisms created in society and their sexual desire. In La Ronde, Schnitzler illustrates how the characters contradict the values of integrity and honesty in the form of deception as they intend to give in to their sexual desires at the expense of these values.
