I have already written an introductory paragraph but it can be changed as needed to improve it: Edgar Allen Poe's "The Cask of Amontillado" is a short story about retribution and the length a man will go to deliver it to his suspected enemy. At the story's heart is a masterful characterization of an angry, persistent and vindictive man named Montresor . Poe's portrayal of this angry man depends mainly on his use of three artistic tools: symbolism, characterization, and irony. A bref examination of these three tools will show you how "The Cask of Amontillado" achieves its stirring effect.

Theme: "The Cask of Amontillado" is a short story about retribution and the length a man will go to deliver it to his suspected enemy.
Tools: 1.) Irony- The murder of Fortunato in the dark and grim catacombs taking place during the lively carnival season.
2.) Characterization- Montressor is characterized by his dark and unforgiving nature.
3.) Symbolism- The jester outfit worn by Fortunato represents how he is foolish and gullible.
Do's and Don'ts from class:

Edgar Allen Poe's "The Cask of Amontillado" is a short story about retribution and the length a man will go to deliver it to his suspected enemy. At the story's heart is a masterful characterization of an angry, persistent, and vindictive man named Montresor. Claiming that Fortunato insulted him, Montresor secretly plans to eliminate his victim. Vengeance drives Montresor to eliminate Fortunato in a gruesome murder. Poe's portrayal of this angry man depends mainly on his use of three artistic tools: symbolism, characterization, and irony. A brief examination of these three tools will show you how "The Cask of Amontillado" achieves its stirring effect.
Poe uses irony extensively to convey a reality different from expectation. From the beginning, irony appears in the name “Fortunato” which implies an individual of good luck. In reality, however, Fortunato is about to face the end of his life. While the name denotes that Fortunato is fortunate, he does not live to see a happy ending but instead ends up in misery. The setting of the story is also ironic. The characters meet during Venice’s Carnival. This is supposed to be a time when individuals engage in celebration. Ironically, Montresor chooses a time meant for celebration and happiness to revenge by killing Fortunato. While both Montresor and Fortunato should be engaged in celebration, the story ultimately ends in tragedy. When Montresor becomes aware that Fortunato is coughing, he asks, “How long have you had that cough?” (Poe 214). The question is ironic because Montresor is not concerned about Fortunato’s cough. Instead, Montresor is planning how to wall Fortunato alive in the catacombs under his house. Showing concern by asking about the cough is meant to ensure that Fortunato remains at ease. The move ensures that Fortunato does not suspect that his friend is about to kill him. The use of irony allows Montresor to hide his evil intentions and carry out his plan without Fortunato suspecting his true intentions.
Characterization exemplifies the dark side of human nature through the character of Montresor and his victim, Fortunato. Poe characterizes Montresor as a manipulative and vengeful individual.
