The best class I have ever taken
I was always interested in reading from a very young age. My parents tell me that even when I was still a toddler, I would have the tendency to take books and newspapers even when I did not know how to read. When I got to the school-going age, my family especially my guardians had a rough time in restricting the number of books I would carry to school. All I wanted was to carry more and more books.
Many years after; I joined college and seemingly my stars were with me. I got a lecturer who was extremely good. Her passion for reading was unmatched and had mastered the skills of the same. There was something about her teaching that motivated all of us to read.
Reading is an art that is often mastered with time. There is certain speed that one must maintain when reading, not too slow, yet not too fast. The lecturer in college helped all of us learn and internalize the art of proper reading. To begin with, she would interest us in her ability to read so well, with so much ease, understanding and confidence. There was also the aspect of believing in every student. Despite several of us making some silly mistakes, she did not at any one time make condescending remarks. Reading a word wrong did not mean that a student was damn according to her. It just meant that the student needs to practice more.
To some people, it is a wonder how reading can be fascinating. There are even others who are concerned and bewildered as to why reading should be offered as a course. What is most important to note about reading is that all courses in school and colleges involve reading. It is not enough to attend lectures and listen. Rather, one must supplement what is taught in class through reading. Ideally therefore, reading as a skill is important for everybody. If one has to read they can as well read properly and with proper mastery of the same.
We would have reading competitions in which several aspects were checked. While as college students we were more interested in the goodies we would get after beating our rivals, there was an in-depth skill that was inculcated and cultivated in us. The skill is so deep rooted that many years after college I still find myself exemplary among my peers.
