On September 1, 2017, the Supreme Court in Kenya made history when it nullified the presidential election. After the small nation held its elections on August 8th, 2017, President Uhuru Kenyatta was announced the winner with 54% of the total votes cast. As per the country’s electoral commission, Uhuru Kenyatta had defeated his closest rival Raila Odinga. However, just like he did after the 2013 elections, Raila Odinga moved to the Supreme Court and filed his petition. Unlike the events of 2013, the Supreme Court agreed with Raila Odinga and therefore, moved to nullify the presidential election results. On 20th September, the Supreme Court judges read out their full judgments and the country’s electoral commission was found to be at fault because it failed to follow the due process.
