Shooting an Elephant
The protagonist in the story is the narrator himself who is George Orwell and if I were to write a letter addressed to him I would say that he has an impact on solving the problem. The elephant that goes on a rampage needs to be contained, yet no one is courageous enough to do so in the fear or being crushed by the elephant. The protagonist sacrifices his safety to shoot the elephant instead of asking someone else to do it. In addition to this, he was pressured by the people from the crowd and during this time, there is emphasis on colonialism because the freedom of others become limited.
The protagonist is unable to tolerate the oppression of the Burmese even if he knows that as being part of the colonist group, he is on the wrong side. This is a tragic part of the story because Orwell is forced to succumb into barbarism even more due to propriety. The paradoxical aspect of colonialism is seen here because they need to act barbaric. The difference here is that Orwell has compassion and this noble act might succeed after all, but due to fear of humiliation, he does an inhumane thing. The actions led to hi...
