According to Bram stocker, science and technology can be used to defeat Dracula. In his novel, Bram uses one of the characters Van Helsing to explain that science and technology can defeat Dracula. Here Dracula is evil and inhuman. The novel Dracula is associated with the Victorian era, the age of cutting-edge technologies. Struggles between science and religion are portrayed when Backer introduces the aspect of technology in the narrative. According to Dr. Van Helsing, technology is the application of science and technology to help human beings undertake different tasks.
For modern-day audiences, it is difficult for them to advance in the century since the publishing of Dracula. At this stage, it is necessary to introduce the aspect of technology that is within spiritualism. In pursuit of Dracula, Van Helsing utilizes religious objects. Van Helsing and his friends try to force Dracula out of London from the novel.
Stocker links religion to science by showing that one idea is not enough in defeating evil creatures in the World; hence to defeat them, there must be a combination of all these factors. (Gall et al 89).Religious beliefs in the novel have been used to instill fear which acts as a motivating factor in defeating Dracula. Van Helsing says that a combination of modern scientific methods and religion can be used together to defeat Dracula. Supernatural powers are considered to be unclean, while religion is considered to be pure. This is displayed when Van Helsing places the Jolly wafer on Mina’s forehead as the religious object burns on her flesh.
The Victorian era was an era that was named after Queen Victoria, whose reign started in 1837 to 1901The generation was also referred to as an era of prosperity and knowledge. Queen Victoria died in 1901. The period, however, can be said not to end after her death, but it is also stretched up to 1914 after the emergence of World War 1. There was rapid development during the Victorian era compared to the recent years. The kind of development that took place includes technological advancement, science, and the growth of religion. Scientific and technical progress can be said to be more of the same, but scientific development is more deep compared to technological advancements'
