The Solution to International Student Isolation
The increased rate of demand for globalization has enhanced the growth for cross-border mobility of students. Universities across the globe experience influx of international students. International students contribute to cultural diversity in institutions. They contribute to cultural exchange, a source of financial revenue, academic prestige and several other positive impacts on the welfare of any state CITATION Kni06 \l 1033 (Knight). However, the rate of isolation and loneliness experienced by the international learners in foreign nations has exuberated. Isolation is an act of having a less satisfying social relationship than desired. The isolation can be in form of education, social, financial and political among others. Therefore, this paper aims at identifying and discussing some of the viable solutions to minimize isolation in educational facilities.
Language stands as a core factor of seclusion. International students come from countries whose language differs from the foreign one. Language creates a barrier to communication. Such a barrier hinders interaction with other students since they cannot understand each other with the varying mode of communication. Apart from social life, language barrier affects the academic performance of the foreign students. They are not able to comprehend stuff thought in foreign language, discuss with classmates or even interact with the lecturers. Isolation sets in with the difficulty in expressing oneself amidst other foreign learners. Sometimes, international students prefer to keep to themselves to avoid embarrassment, mockery, and shame. A coping strategy of the language barrier is for the institution to set up class groups that aim at learning and talking the formal school language (Joseph & Wa-Mbaleka 4). Also, the institution should take the initial months prior to class commencement to tutor the transnational students the foreign language whether English, Japanese or Spanish. Also, schools should have writing centers and language learning organizations to help the foreign students in their speech and writing skills. Failure to tutor new students the foreign language marks the slow communication and adjustment of the learners within the local context.
Cultural differences that result in culture shock of the new international students is another aspect that leads to separation. A foreign country entails foreign culture. Culture constitutes the dressing habits, the food, behavior, and way of conducting various activities. Thus, global scholars have difficulty in adjusting when the host and home cultures conflict that results in discrimination amongst students. Thus, the institution should create a forum specific for cultural showcase and interaction. Conversely, the school should make arrangements where culturally different students share a room and have diverse cultures represented in campus groups and activities.
