Socrates Arguments For Not Escaping From The Prison
Everyone has an obligation of obeying the law no matter how just or evil it may be; more so when it is a rule in the legal system of the location, we currently are. A statement of legal obligation is brought out when there is a reassessment of the relationship between ethics and laws. Socrates was accused of committing a crime by corrupting youths with his philosophical teachings (Colaiaco 156). He faced a trial in court and was later sentenced to death. Besides, he had a strong belief that he had a duty of obeying the law even though it results in an unjust execution. Therefore, this paper will discuss the reasons as to why he did not escape from the prison even though he had a chance to.
According to Colaiaco (2013), Crito offers to help Socrates escape from the prison since he had only two days to face his execution (156). He refuses the offer by giving an argument based on the “the voice of the Laws of Athens,” which explains the relationship between the state and the subject (Tarrant 89). He argues that the relationship between the state and the subject matches the relationship between a parent and his children, which requires obedience, submission, and trust. He rejects the plan arguing that it would bring transgression between him and the state of Athens. Escaping would lead to unjust harm to his friends, the nation, and also to him since it is unholy to commit violence with your parents.
