How has social media affected millennials ability to integrate into the workforce?
The millennial generation is one of the most informed because they have been exposed to various information activities at a vast rate. The ease of access to the internet has made it easier to connect with people in different locations. While the young generation has the ability to multiprocess different things, one of the concerns is whether reliance on social media has affected their interpersonal skills. At the same time, in a multigenerational workforce, the social skills play an important role because of the differences between the generations. As the baby boomers are retiring and the millennial become the largest share of the workforce, employers still seek candidates with good social and communication skills.
The transition of the millennials into the workforce presents challenges associated with the communication skills, and yet social media skills are increasingly important in the workplace. The millennials are not only digitally connected they are also self-expressive and this is crucial since social skills are prioritized. The millenials tend to prefer access to a lot of information and high level feedback, and this is valuable in the workplace as it is possible for them to understand what is expected of them and reduces misunderstandings. Since employees are at times collaborate on projects and often share information cooperation is one of the social skills that affect how they relate with others (Bedwell, Fiore, and Salas 173). The challenge when using social media is that one interacts with others using electronic media where there is no need for collaborating. It is likely that spending too much time on the social media may affect how individuals cooperate when placed in a situation requiring team work.
People value technology depending on whether it was available, their understanding and reliability. Since the millenials have grown up at a time when they were exposed to information technology advances they lace more value on the value of the technology compared to the prior generations. Technology and communication are closely connected as technology has affected the way people communicate with one another. For the older generations, face-to-face communication, phone and traditional mail were the most common. Gen-Xers entered the workforce at a time when the e-mail and internet were being adopted, and now technology has advanced that the social media platforms influence how people interact.
The cyber relationships are normally nontransferable, and in the workplace millenials interact with people from a different background. Typically, in social media networks people interact with those who share similar interests, family members and close friends. This limits the choices of who people identity with, and even sometimes individuals take on a fake online persona that is different from their real life. In the workplace the person-to person friendships and relationships can be more valuable where the tone of voice, body language, eye contact and other non-verbal cues represent different messages in the communication process that people learn when they interact with more people.
According to Deming (1597), even the math-intensive occupations increasingly require social skills, which cannot be automated or substituted in the workplace. The convenience and ease of connecting with people over the internet, has meant that the millenials are more reliant on digital technology for communication unlike earlier generations. The technological dependence has a downside since the young people spend a lot of time on the internet rather than learning soft skills like communication and social skills. Additionally, the internet has a lot of i...
