THE FALLACY OF “WORK-LIFE BALANCE” ESSAY
BY: STEWART D. FRIEDMAN
A lot of people talk about work life balance, many more people today than when I first started addressing this issue twenty years ago when my first son was born. And its becoming a very present issue in many different sectors of our society and abroad. And there’s a lot of important reasons for that. But balance is the wrong metaphor. Balance is the wrong metaphor because it implies trade-offs. It implies that you’ve got to give up one part of your life to have success in another part. And what I want to encourage people to do is to see the possibility of what I call “four- way win” which requires that you use leadership to better integrate the different parts of your life, all four: work, home, community, and self

Video Summary
This short video by Steward Friedman talks about how to be a better leader and have a better life all at the same time. The total leadership approach that is articulated in this video gives practical ways on how one can attain a better life by being a better leader. The narrator proposes three ways through which the individual can be productive at the work place. These three ways are being authentic, being whole and innovative. The author states that doing this is crucial as it guarantees what he calls the “four way wins.” These wins as outlined in the video are enhanced performance at work or in school, improve performance at home with the family, the community, and for the individual. This approach is not about attaining a work/life balance as this does not exist but it is rather about creating harmony among the various parts of the individual’s life as a leader in all of them.
Essay Response
This essay reinforces the message presented in the video. In this short essay, Friedman notes that the term work/life balance is misplaced as it implies that an individual has to trade off one part of life in order to have success in another. However, the author states that this does not have to be the case as an individual can attain success in the four crucial areas of life (work, home, community, and the self) by employing better leadership.
