Section I: Introduction
Shonda Rhimes is an African American female creator, writer and TV executive producer and has written the book “Year of yes: How to dance it out, stand in the sun and be your own.” Rhimes studied at Dartmouth College and majored in English and film studies. The author emphasizes the importance of self-love and acceptance as reflected in her decision to say yes to the right people. I chose the memoir to better understand what influences and inspires Rhimes in her work and how saying yes changed her life as a famous yet shy and introverted individual.
The author’s memoir emphasizes that finding ones voice requires one to know when to say yes and no and Rhimes missed out on some opportunities because she said no too many times.
There will be focus on the author’s experiences and family based on the memoir and how this is linked to her personal growth. Shonda Rhimes early life in Chicago, Illinois influences her creation of multi-dimensional characters mostly women of color.
Shonda has cast black female actresses who do not reflect stereotypical roles and her representation of various characters is broad that they are not one-dimensional. Despite her shows having a large female audience from the early adulthood to the mid forties, the characters come from different spheres life. The author is a confident storyteller and her memoir reflects how they can overcome their obstacles and achieve success even if they doubt themselves and nobody believes in them. Saying yes helped the author to learn and grow as she was able to consider meeting new people in the creative arts and considering new ideas that improved her creativity.
