Select One Team from the NHL: Pittsburgh Penguins
The name of the team that I have chosen is Pittsburgh Penguins (1). I chose the Penguins because my grandparents are from Pittsburgh and they are fans of the team (2). The Penguins are based in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and they have always been in this state since the team was founded, but they joined their new arena known as the PPG Paints Arena where they played starting from the 2010-11 season (3). The colors of the Penguins are black, yellow, gold, and white, but they initially wore light blue, dark green, and white colors when they first debuted at home in 1967 (nhl.com) (4). During the 2017-18 season, the team adopted Adidas as the agent to retail its official NFL uniforms. The color of the team is currently “Pittsburgh Gold” which is won when playing at home, and the white color that is worn during road games.
The logo of the team is a penguin and the first mascot of the Pittsburgh Penguins was known as Penguin Pete and he was a penguin that was born in Ecuador and he on loan from the Pittsburgh Zoo (5). After his death in 1968, he was replaced by a mascot called “Re-Pete”. Later, the team adopted a traditional mascot known as Iceburgh. The head coach of the Penguins is Mike Sullivan and he replaced Mike Johnston in 2015 (6). Sullivan works with assistant coaches Jacques Martin and Mark Recchi (nhl.com). Before joining Pittsburgh Penguins, Sullivan worked as the head coach of Penguins' American Hockey League affiliate that is located in Wilkes-Barre/Scranton (7). During this period, he managed to lead the team to a record of 18-5 as well as the first place in the Atlantic Division.
Sydney Crosby is the team captain of the Penguins, having been promoted to this position in 2007 and he became the youngest person to ever captain a team in NHL history (8). After completing successfully his second season with the team, Crosby had managed to lead the team to 105 points, 47 wins, and the first playoff berth since 2001. He also managed to win several awards, including the Art Ross Trophy, a finalist for the Hart Trophy, the most Valuable Player in the NHL, and the Lester B. Pearson Award. During, the 2016-17 season, the Penguins finished second in the NHL Metropolitan Division with a record of 50-21-11 (111 points) in the Stanley Cup Champions (9) (hockey-reference.com). The 2017-18 Pittsburgh Penguins Roster and Statistics indicates that the team is 4th in NHL Metropolitan Division with a record of 24-20-3 (51 points). Crosby also led the Penguins to the 2nd straight Stanley Cup win in 2018.
