4. The writing is polished and free of errors in spelling, grammar and punctuation.
5. Quotations are accurate and correctly incorporated into the essay. References are correctly

Novel Comparison Between “Secret Life of Bees” And “The Help”
“Secret Life of Bees” by Sue Monk Kidd and “The Help” by Kathryn Stockett focus on the racial issues that affect African Americans. “The Help” involves a story of three African American women who were working in white households and are also undergoing exploitation. The book explores their relationship with white women and some of the positive and negative aspects that arise from their interactions. “Secret Life of Bees” is set in South Carolina and centers on Lily Owens, who runs away with her caregiver and gets introduced to a new world. Racism is a major issue in both “the secret life of bees” and “the help,” and it influences the decisions and actions of the characters.
Both novels are similar since they deal with problems that have not been completely solved. Racial quality is a significant issue in our modern-day society, and it persists despite the change in laws and legislations in “Secret Life of Bees,” racial conflict is a significant theme. This has been a reason why the characters are undergoing emotional and physical pain, which negatively affects the lies of the characters. For instance, early in the novel, Rosaleen is harassed and beaten by three racists. The beehive keeper, who was hired, called Zack, also undergoes the same fate. Kidd suggests that “the godson of the matriarch August—is beaten by white men” and unjustly arrested (Kidd 183). Zack was beaten due to racial discrimination and this affected how he interacted with others. Violence is common, especially towards defenseless black people. In “the help,” racism is institutionalized. Several laws were passed which legitimized discriminatory behavior and encouraged racist views. The government has supported the unfairness, so the women of color are forced to undergo racism problems without any assistance. The maids also stay a household until the children got older, and then she leaves once the child realizes the racial differences. Stockett writes that Aibileen Clark “moves on to another job when the babies get too old and stop being color-blind” (128). Racism is inherent in all aspects of society, and once a person becomes older, they become aware of the racial differences which have an impact on how they interact with others.
Both novels rely on main characters who do not have mothers, but it becomes an influential factor in regards to how they interact with the rest of society. In “Secret Life of Bees,” Lily’s mother passed away while she was still young, and the death is still mysterious. The absence of her mother means that she undergoes spiritual and emotional transformation due to the black matriarch known as August. Just like the black ladies, she also experiences discrimination since she is white. She is not happy when June says, “But she’s white, August” (Kidd 87).
