The Brain, Syntax, and Semantics
As far as Searle is concerned, the discussion surrounding the brain and its infinite capabilities is one that is significantly influenced by the approach one takes. According to Searle, the brain is a powerful tool, much like a computer, but also one that has the ability to not only process images, but also attach meaning to them (Searle 27-28). This forms a core part of Searle’s approach to syntax and semantics. According to him, the brain, just like any other computer, relies on a specific syntax in order to operate and process data or information. In this sense, syntax is a powerful tool that runs the brain.
