Introduction
‘‘Mickey Mouse Monopoly’’ is a documentary written and produced by Chyng Feng Sun, and narrated by Monique Fordham. The documentary takes a close and critical look at the world Disney films create and the stories they tell about race, gender and class. The video further analyzes Disney’s cultural pedagogy, examines its corporate power, and explores its vast influence on the global culture. Disney is one of the oldest companies considering that it was formed in 1923 and producing its first movie, snow-white, and the seven dwarfs, in 1937. Since its founding, Disney has specialized in making kid-friendly movies, most of which seem to be entirely innocent. However, much of it seems innocent to children; only when an adult read into the movie do, they understand the various hidden aspects and meaning found in many of Disney’s movies. For example, a film such as Pocahontas has changed and reshaped history-making Europeans less brutal than the actual events. Through this “innocence,” Disney has gained the capacity to have a lasting impact on the upcoming generations since they are the majority consumers of the company’s content.
