The Role of Women in the Great Gatsby
The Great Gatsby is novel composed by Scott Fitzgerald around 1922 in New York. It is a love story, loss and scandal during the social unrest. The author uses the character to develop the idea of the changes that happened in America during the time when the role of women undermined by men; the society was male dominated one (Fitzgerald). The role of women in the novel significant changes since America decided to recognise the right of women, they were independent unlike before and undermined by the males and not allowed to participate in the decision-making process. In the novel, women have the right to vote and present their views to the government? The novel composed at the time when males defined the role women were to play and that any deviation meant that such woman committed social vices.
In the novel, there are four women who faced myriads of challenges as they lived in a society that was male dominated. Let's look closer the character each of them played:
Daisy Buchanan
The author described her as wealthy women and the husband of Tom Buchanan. She is beautiful woman who uses her beauty to seduce men (Fitzgerald). Jay Gatsby show affection toward Daisy and lied to her that he was a wealthy so as to convince her, she eventually falls in love with Gatsby, and the two even had an intimate relationship before Gatsby went for a war promising Daisy she would come back(Fitzgerald). Daisy waited for ages for Gatsby to come but eventually gave up and since her beauty noticed and appreciated by every man she eventually got married to Tom who was a wealthy and coming from an aristocratic family (Fitzgerald). The author describes Daisy as a woman who never seems satisfied and frustrated by her husband infidelity. Gatsby on the other hand after realising that Daisy is married to Tom, he vows to use all possible means to win back Daisy from Tom. He engages in criminal activities in the effort to gain wealth and eventually win Daisy.
