The world that we live in is similar to that of Omelas city. It looks happy at the surface with beautiful structures but inside there are some people suffering just like the confined child. However, ironically, these people who are suffering are the ones who have made the luxurious structures in the city. This is the same case in our world where all the good things that we see today are out of the sufferings and blood of our ancestors. According to Le Guin in the article “The Ones Who Walk Away from Omelas’’ the success of the people of Omelas depend on the abominable misery of the child confined in a room (Le-Guin, Ursula & Michael n.p). Therefore, the work describes a society with no rules and laws where the rights of the disadvantaged cannot be exercised. Omelas city personalizes a nation without government, slaves, war, and police. However, the public is aware of the rot in their country such as corruption, but there is nothing they can do because they have no power. Those who have bad behaviors in the society join the procession. I agree with Le Guin that every perfect thing has a dark side because people have to sacrifice what they love most to prosper.
I agree with the author that the people of Omelas were successful, but was there equity? No? For example, during industrial revolution in Europe, most unfortunate families worked in hostile environments with little pay while the upper class enjoyed the benefits. Ostensibly, the sacrifice of the unfortunate people is what led to the development of the luxurious buildings that are seen today in Europe.
Le Guin also describes that some people who came to see the child would return home in tears or in a tearless rage and there is nothing they could do to help the suffering child. However, some were happy with the child’s situation like the guard who kicked it to stand after bringing it food, while others knew the child’s situation but assumed just like some audience in the crowd. Notwithstanding, some women, boys, men and girls who saw the kid would walk away from the beautiful city and never come back. The author tries to describe the various reactions of people on ill things that happen within a society. He postulates that there are certain wrongs in the society that people cannot stop. However, some people will assume, others will walk away, while some individuals who love the acts will support. This applies to a rotten authoritative government where irrespective of the views of the public, there is not...
